Del Mar Fair pics!
All photos taken by me on July 2, 2000.
(Just thought I 'd throw that in) : )
The next several pictures were taken at the Del Mar Fair on July 2, 2000.
The first two pictures are the sand sculpture at the main entrance. This year's theme was
"California Dreaming", so many of the sculptures featured surf and beach.
These pictures don't give justice to the detail and size of these works of art,
most of which are about 10-12 feet tall.
This one is a bit larger, about 30 feet
in length, and includes color (the surfing cowboy toward the back).
These two are "The Zipper". The surfer's board opens the zipper (look below the
front of the surf board) and as he moves forward, his hand reaches around the curl of
the wave and closes the zipper. Note the "hang loose" pose of his large right hand. Neato!
For some reason, when I think of the Del Mar Fair, this is the first image that
enters my mind. It's just inside the main entrance, and is surrounded by food
booths and lots of people.
Nice kitty.
Enough with the sand sculptures... This is another nice kitty, but his purring
is caused by 87 octane fuel and he pounces the freeways to promote cat food.
For the first time ever at a U.S. fair, Del Mar had live professional
boxing. We watched this match between a couple of FlyWeight's: one from
San Diego and the other from Los Angeles. Everyone seemed to agree that
the boxer from San Diego won, but the judges ruled it a draw and thus received
an appropriate round of BOOs from the crowd.
Antique gas-powered devices were featured at an outdoor exhibit.
Tractors, saws, drills, and several, like these two water pumps, were running.
They sounded kind of like lawn mowers at low idle, and together made an
interesting sound and every few seconds would "puff" a little exhaust.
This is a shot taken from the Ferris Wheel at the West end of the fairgrounds.
